Stacks and Studios

Do you pile your things in neat little stacks, waiting until you get to them?  If you are a stacker like me, then today is your day, because Seth Apter has a blogpost celebrating that very thing.

As it turns out, I JUST went through my three stacks earlier this week as I was organizing my new office/studio space in my home.  So I can't show you my messy piles (but I assure you, I do have them) but I can show you a stack of books in my new space, and show you how a New York City dweller -- who runs a business from home and has a passion for art -- keeps it all organized.  First the stack, then the studio.
The Stack

The work desk and art "studio"

I keep my files for work and the art supplies I don't use every day in a closet in my bedroom.  Out here are only the things I use a lot.

Same thing with books -- in this work area are the books I refer to often, for art and sewing reference.

pens, markers, brushes, pan pastels, pen and ink

That red candy container, bottom left, is full of portfolio oil pastels.  Watercolors, aquarelles, and a vintage file card box for notes.

plastic drawers for small things like small tools, adhesives and paper tapes,

And things like gel medium, gesso, texture paste, crackle paste, and so much more have a new home here.

My sunny little corner of the living room. (As you can see, I'm not disturbing the cat at all.)

Whatever you do for work or fun, how do you keep your workspace organized?

And tell me, are you a stacker???

I do not keep it organized. there is a place for everything but lots of my stuff never goes in its place. This behavior enables me to hide behind the attitude of my mother who insisted that every thing be put away so that you felt life was made up of putting stuff away and taking it out. NOW in MY space life is an adventure and when i work on a project everything comes out and stays out. When working on 2 prjoects the floor is taken over and on 3 the cats revolt!

Isn't it great that we can make our lives be exactly how we want to be, and don't have to live out our parents' lives all over again?

I like to be messy when I'm creating, but I'm also more inspired to create again when I can easily find things -- and that requires me to put them away afterwards. I'm always fascinated by people who can immediately put their finger on things in a room that looks like a hurricane blew through. I don't have that talent.

I definitely am a stacker - only my stacks are not usually very neat at all! Mine get created when either I am not finished the project that I was working on in 1 sitting or I can't decide what to do with them, or if it is the end of the day and I just don't feel like putting stuff away!

I got smart one time and bought myself a couple of "project boxes" so I could neatly put away projects I wasn't yet finished with and then could neatly stack them away (along with the bits and pieces I needed to finish them with). That was good in theory, but then they got forgotten about and I "lost" a lot of supplies that I couldn't find or remember where I put them. Yikes!

Haven't found a solution to this dilemma yet! Also glad to know I am not the only one.

Hey, I use the whole house for my work space. I have a room but some how I end up with stuff in every room. Trust me I have many more stacks than were pictured. It is nice to have one place where you can put it, if you want to...your area is wonderful!

Thanks for sharing your workspace with us. I'm sort of a stacker, but more in a practical sense I suppose. Next to my work desk I have stacked the stuff that I want at hand, like my fabrian paper is stacked on top of the paper palet, which is stacked on top of newspapers I use to put underneath my work to protect the table a little and so on. Downstairs on my coffee table I have on stack of magazines that I want to read and one stack of artsy books I'm going trough. That way they are at hand when I'm sitting on the couch. I don't really stack stuff that i don't know what to do with. I don't really have stuff like that, haha. As for organizing I try to give everything a space to sit together. You know, stamps with stamps, paper with paper, ink with inks. That's how I organize my room and it works. I know where everything is. What's most important to me is to have the stuff I use most at hands reach.

Whole house stacker here. In 20 years of running a home biz, I cannot remember misplacing a thing, all of my stacks were awesome and intelligently grouped. Now, after all the arthritis drugs helped me become less perfectionist and more oh-well type b, my stacks are more like hastily built statues to that day or project and really kind of toxic. So, it is one longtime habit I wish I no longer had as I now have it. I'm impressed by your set-up though, and I wouldn't call them stacks -- I'd call it highly organized! xoxo

As a teacher, I had a large desk that was a tribute to stacks. Now I have a sleep black parson's desk for my computer so it's pretty tidy. I stack bills...UGH!

I love the sight of s tacked books and have turned my dining room table into a library table with stacks of my Paris/France and photography books all over it. It makes me happy to seen them out :)

I'm an organization nut, so I really enjoyed seeing all your stacks. Very nicely done with that cabinet and bookcase. You have the absolute perfect spot to create art. Sorry I'm late arriving, but I'm determined to see all the stacks.
